Challenges and perspectives of the media in West Africa at the heart of a PhD Seminar at the University of Ghana

The Department of Communication Studies at the University of Ghana (UG) is organizing a PhD Seminar on a strategic and timely theme: “Challenges and Prospects of the Media in West Africa.” This academic gathering will bring together researchers, doctoral students, and professionals to discuss the profound transformations taking place within the West African media ecosystem.

The keynote speaker at this seminar is Sulemana Braimah, Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), a leading organization committed to defending press freedom and strengthening media in the region. His presentation is expected to provide both institutional and practical insights into contemporary challenges: political pressures, disinformation, digital transformation, the economic viability of media outlets, and the safety of journalists.

The seminar will be moderated by Professor Audrey Gadzekpo, a renowned academic in the field of communication studies, ensuring a rigorous and structured discussion of the scientific and professional issues facing the sector.

In a context marked by increasing regulations, the economic fragility of media outlets, and the rise of digital platforms, this meeting aims to analyze not only the constraints but also the opportunities offered by innovation, new economic models, and civic engagement.

Scheduled for Friday, February 13, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., the seminar will also be held online via Microsoft Teams – shorturl.at/ZOEjv, thus facilitating broader participation beyond the Ghanaian academic community.

This PhD Seminar is part of a dynamic of critical and forward-looking reflection on the future of media in West Africa, at a time when their democratic role is more crucial than ever.
