TikTok, a Cultural and Social Engine in Nigeria

The fifth edition of Top Trends 2026, organized by mediaReach OMD in partnership with Lagos Business School, Pan-Atlantic University, GeoPoll, and the National Institute of Marketing of Nigeria (NIMN), brought together marketing and communications leaders around the theme: “Informed Decisions to Revolutionize the Marketing Industry in 2026.” January 29, 2026 at Lagos, this conference has become an essential platform where data, analysis, and market trends combine to guide the strategic decisions of industry players.

One of the key findings of the 2026 edition revealed that TikTok has become the leading cultural engine in Nigeria, doubling its user base between 2024 and 2025 and establishing itself as the country’s largest social platform. According to Emmanuel Adediran (mediaReach OMD), TikTok now dictates the cultural agenda of urban youth, the most economically influential demographic. Brands that fail to develop authentic strategies on this platform risk losing all cultural relevance with this audience, which sets trends, shapes conversations, and influences purchasing decisions. According to Data Reportal’s Nigeria Digital Report 2026, 66% of young Nigerians use TikTok regularly, and 71% log on daily, far surpassing the engagement of other platforms and rivaling tools like WhatsApp and email.

Overwhelming Domination in Short Videos

In the short video segment, TikTok holds 51.15% of the market, far ahead of Facebook Stories (23.45%), YouTube Shorts (11.55%), and Instagram Reels (10.30%). Adediran emphasizes: “When a platform controls more than half the market and more than double that of its closest competitor, we’re no longer talking about competition, we’re talking about sector dominance.”

TikTok’s dominance rests as much on its numbers as on the perceived authenticity of its content, essential for a Nigerian audience increasingly critical of overly produced or corporate content. Consumers favor genuine and spontaneous content, giving brands a strategic imperative: to create authentic and culturally relevant messages to effectively engage young audiences.
